Abortionist George Tiller Gunned Down

While I do not support abortions, or those who perform them, I was saddened to hear to hear of the awful way Tiller was killed yesterday morning. While I do not agree with what he did, his life should not have ended that way. I hope the law finds whoever committed this crime against him, and is justly punished.

WICHITA, Kan. – Late-term abortion doctor George Tiller, a prominent advocate for abortion rights wounded by a protester more than a decade ago, was shot and killed Sunday at a church in Wichita where he was serving as an usher and his wife was in the choir, his attorney said.

Tiller was shot during morning services at Reformation Lutheran Church, attorney Dan Monnat said. Police said a manhunt was under way for the shooter, who fled in a car registered to a Kansas City suburb nearly 200 miles away.

National anti-abortion groups had long focused on Tiller, whose Women's Health Care Services clinic is one of just three in the nation where abortions are performed after the 21st week of pregnancy.

In 1991, the Summer of Mercy protests organized by Operation Rescue drew thousands of anti-abortion activists to this city for demonstrations marked by civil disobedience and mass arrests.

Some abortion opponents had resorted to attacks against Tiller long before Sunday's shooting. A protester shot Tiller in both arms in 1993, and his clinic was bombed in 1985.

Anti-abortion group Operation Rescue issued a statement denouncing the shooting.

"We are shocked at this morning's disturbing news that Mr. Tiller was gunned down," said Troy Newman, Operation Rescue's president. "Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice. We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning."

Capt. Brent Allred said Wichita police were looking for a gunman who fled in a 1993 light blue Ford Taurus registered in the Kansas City suburb of Merriam, Kan. No other details about the shooting were immediately released.

The phone line at the home of Tiller and wife, Jeanne, had a busy signal Sunday.

Tiller began providing abortion services in 1973. He acknowledged abortion was as socially divisive as slavery or prohibition but said the issue was about giving women a choice when dealing with technology that can diagnose severe fetal abnormalities before a baby is born.

"Pre-natal testing without pre-natal choices is medical fraud," Tiller once said.

After the 1991 protests, Tiller kept mostly to his heavily guarded clinic, although in 1997 he opened it to three tours by state lawmakers and the media.

Tiller remained prominent in the news, in part because of an investigation started begun by former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline, an abortion opponent.

Prosecutors had alleged that Tiller had gotten second opinions from a doctor who was essentially an employee of his, not independent as state law requires. A jury in March acquitted Tiller of all 19 misdemeanor counts.

"I am stunned by this lawless and violent act, which must be condemned and should be met with the full force of law," Kline said in a written statement. "We join in lifting prayer that God's grace and presence rest with Dr. Tiller's family and friends."

Abortion opponents also questioned then-Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' ties to Tiller before the Senate confirmed her this year as U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary. Tiller donated thousands of dollars to Sebelius over the years.

Rejecting Abortion Using Obama's Argument

On Friday, January 23, Barack Obama rescinded the Mexico City Policy -- this means that Americans are now paying for abortions all over the world. Not only this, but Obama's adminstration promises to sign into law the FOCA (The Freedom of Choice Act), an act that would practically remove all state-level restrictions on abortion.

Our president stated in his Call to Renewal address, "Democracy demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal, rather than religion-specific, values. It requires that their proposals be subject to argument, and amenable to reason. I may be opposed to abortion for religious reasons, but if I seek to pass a law banning the practice, I cannot simply point to the teachings of my church or evoke God's will. I have to explain why abortion violates some principle that is accessible to people of all faiths, including those with no faith at all."

It seems, then, that our president ought to ban abortion if a valid argument, apart from religion, can be made as to why it is an immoral act. While many would say this cannot be done, it is actually very easy to make such an argument.

In fact, it is not only possible to make an argument, but to make the argument very well, and quite strong. "In his book Pro-Life Answers to Pro-Choice Arguments, Randy Alcorn notes a number of completely secular arguments for why abortion should be prohibited by law [one of them being that m]edical textbooks and scientific reference works consistently agree that human life begins at conception. Some of the world's most prominent scientists and physicians' testimonies to Congress have asserted this scientific fact.

One might add to Alcorn's remarks that there is without question considerably more scientific evidence for life beginning at conception than there is for global warming. Yet the president earnestly supports protection of the environment and dismisses the need for protecting the unborn. Is that reasonable?

"If there is uncertainty about when human life begins, the benefit of the doubt should go to preserving life," says Alcorn. "If a hunter is uncertain whether movement in the brush is caused by a person, does this uncertainty lead him to fire or not to fire? If you're driving at night and you think the dark figure ahead on the road may be a child, but it may just be the shadow of a tree, do you drive into it or do you put on the brakes? If we find someone who may be dead or alive, but we're not sure, what is the best policy -- to assume he is alive and try to save him, or to assume he is dead and walk away?"

What faith group or atheists would honestly say go ahead and fire at the unknown object behind the bush, go ahead and drive into the dark and unknown figure on the road, or even walk away from the person that has questionably fallen dead or alive -- even if it's me? Whether a person of faith or not, the right to life is not something theoretical or hypothetical -- it's personal and fundamental to all...and an unjustifiable or careless breach of that right is universally agreed to be a crime."

President Obama, the case has been efficiently and sufficiently made by many people. Please, look at the facts, and repeal and prohibit those laws advancing the termination of the life within the womb.

Immigrants keep customs - prefer sons over daughters

Researchers contend sex-selection abortions are reducing female births, and some of that is occurring in the United States.

Female babies are being aborted largely by Asian immigrant families in America, based on the age-old cultural prejudices in their home countries. Bill Saunders of Family Research Council is saddened but not surprised.

"We know that around the world in countries of their origin there is a fair amount of sex-selection abortion, in India and China in particular," he notes.

Saunders also notices the irony of the situation. "Pro-life people are often accused of being anti-woman," he points out. "The fact of the matter is legalized abortion is resulting in the disappearance of what demographers call the 'girl child' around the world because a lot of potential parents are using medical technology to abort the girls."

These women, according to Saunders, receive sonograms to determine the baby's sex and often choose to abort the baby if it is a girl. He adds that there is nothing illegal about that process. "Here in America you can have an abortion any time and for any reason, except partial-birth abortion," he says.

Saunders believes sex-selection abortion is especially prevalent among the immigrant groups if they have had a girl first, and then want only a boy for the second child.

YouTube Censorship

The pro-life group Live Action is taking issue with YouTube over allegations of censorship.

Spokeswoman Lila Rose had posted videos proving that a caller offered donations to Planned Parenthood on the basis of using the money to abort black babies; and that the organization accepted the offer, in some cases "gleefully." But YouTube, according to a report from LifeNews.com, has blocked four videos over the past two months, labeling them as "inappropriate content."

"Those videos were up for over seven months. They garnered national media attention," says Rose. "They had together 160,000 views, and in just the past few weeks YouTube, one by one, has been taking them off [and] has been banning them from the website," she argues.

To Rose's knowledge, the videos did not violate YouTube policies. "[W]e are definitely concerned about this censorship. The videos need to be back up," she continues. "They tell an important story for the American public to know about this huge corporation that gets taxpayer money...."

Rose contends that Planned Parenthood receives roughly $300 milllion in taxpayer funds each year.

Baby Survives Abortion

Baby Pronounced Dead Lives After Hours in Cooler

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A stillborn Israeli baby who was pronounced dead by doctors "came back to life" on Monday after spending hours in a hospital refrigerator.

The baby, weighing only 600 grams at birth, spent at least five hours inside one of the hospital's refrigerated storage units, before her parents, who had taken her to be buried, began noticing some movement.

"We unwrapped her and felt she was moving. We didn't believe it at first. Then she began holding my mother's hand, and then we saw her open her mouth," said 26-year-old Faiza Magdoub, the baby's mother.

The baby was pronounced dead several hours earlier, after doctors at Western Galilee hospital in northern Israel were forced to abort her mother's pregnancy because of internal bleeding. Magdoub was 23 weeks into her pregnancy.

"We don't know how to explain this, so when we don't know how to explain things in the medical world we call it a miracle, and this is probably what happened," hospital deputy director Moshe Daniel said.

The baby was then taken to the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit for further treatment, but doctors were not sure how long she will live.

Motti Ravid, a professor of internal medicine, told Israel's Channel 10 that the low temperature inside the cooler had slowed down the baby's metabolism and likely helped her survive.

What Does This Mean?

Over the past week and a half we've seen that size does not equal value, level of awareness does not make someone more or less human, where you are has no bearing on who you are, and degree of dependency does not affect personhood.

The end result of this is that the most common arguments for abortion are defeated, and we see that the unborn is human. As humans their life needs to be respected. Abortion is not the way to go about "getting rid of your problem." There are many couples in the world who want to have children but are unable to. Adoption is a great way to give your child life, and save yourself a lot of heartache, while fulfilling the dream of someone else. You have a choice. Choose life.
